Community Memberships

The Sky Dragon Cooperative is now offering memberships to Hamiltonians who share our goal of creating grassroots development projects that are economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.  Community members will be part of a restructured organization that will hold board elections in May of 2011, and will steer the future direction of the Co-op along with investors, managers, staff and community partners.

Community Memberships allow the Co-op to access more community skill, input and involvement.  They are also an important source of fundraising, and can play a crucial role in ensuring the Coop’s long-term financial sustainability.  Working in partnership with the Ontario Public Interest Research Group (PIRG), we are able to offer tax receipts for upper levels of membership ($100, $200, or $500).

Every member is making an important contribution to the Co-op and to its vision for an ethical, democratic and sustainable Hamilton.  If you share the vision, then come on-board and contribute to this process of collective transformation!

Becoming a Member

To become a community member, decide on which level of membership makes sense for you.  All membership levels are important, and all members will have equal voting and representation rights in the restructured Co-op.  If you have the means though, higher levels of membership contribute an extra level of financial support that will ensure the Co-op is able to survive and thrive for years to come.  In addition, Sustainers and Major Sustainers also contribute to the Co-op’s monthly publication, Mayday Magazine, and in return receive a monthly subscription mailed to their door.

Once you have decided on a membership level, just drop by the Sky Dragon Centre and speak with a staff person.  Staff have membership forms and cards at the counter and can help you register your membership.  Once you have paid for your membership and filled out your card, Co-op staff will contact you when it has been laminated and is ready for use.  You can either pick up your laminated card at the Sky Dragon Centre, or have it mailed to you.  Level 2, 3 and 4 members will receive charitable tax receipts sent to them directly from the Ontario PIRG.  Tax receipts will take between three and four weeks to arrive.

Alternatively, you may decide to send in your membership application via mail.  To do this, simply mail a cheque for the requisite amount to the Co-op’s address, along with your full address and contact information (phone, email).  The Co-op will then process your membership and mail your card to you.

IMPORTANT – Membership cheques for level 2, 3 and 4 members need to be made out to “Ontario PIRG” in order to receive a tax receipt.  In the memo line of the cheque, write “direct to Sky Dragon Co-op”.
